Serpentine Belts
Most of the parts under your hood needs to work in sync. Serpentine belts are long, rubber belts that transport and sync power between different parts under the hood. This belt goes around the alternators, power steering pumps, air conditioning compressors, and water pumps.
This shouldn't be mistaken for a timing belt, which is only encased inside the cylinder between the crankshaft and the camshaft. The serpentine belt is part of almost anything outside the engine.
A typical serpentine belt has a lifetime of about 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Within this threshold, you might find these symptoms that show a faulty serpentine belt:
- Squealing or chirping sounds
- Check engine lights
- Unusual noises
- Visual signs of wear on the rubber (cracking, glazing, misplacement, etc)
- Performance loss across the parts running along the belt
Putting aside some time to align your serpentine belts is important to the quality of your driving experience.
